Cricket's three formats and major tournaments

sixes cricket match exciting moment

Cricket is played in three main formats — T20, One Day International (ODI) and Test. Each format has its own pace and tactics, so the betting markets require a different approach for each.

T20 is the fastest format — matches finish in just 20 overs. Franchise tournaments like BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) or IPL see rapid swings in a short time. During Bangladesh Tigers matches at the T20 World Cup, the excitement runs high from Dhaka to the rest of the country.

In ODI, the 50-over contest means tactics shift through the middle overs, opening up new opportunities in the betting markets. Test cricket is a five-day match — longer, with the possibility of a turnaround, and a draw is a valid result, which the other two formats do not have.

ICC ranking matches, bilateral series or the Champions Trophy — sixes covers almost all major international cricket competitions.

How betting on football and other sports differs

At sixes you can bet on football alongside cricket. Football has markets like match winner, goalscorer, handicap and points total, but there are more matches compared to cricket and each match lasts just 90 minutes. In a low-scoring football match, one small moment — such as a penalty — can completely change the result.

Cricket has specific markets built around runs, wickets and overs that do not exist in football. In Test cricket, the possibility of a draw means the odds structure is different. In T20, the last two overs can swing the result either way, so live betting markets stay much more active.

Markets are also available for sports like Kabaddi, tennis and basketball. Understanding the rhythm of each sport makes betting more enjoyable. Visit our badminton page for details on badminton betting markets and formats.

Format Comparison

  • T20 — fast, more wicket moments
  • ODI — balanced pace, mid-match swing
  • Test — draw possible, long-form tactics
  • Football — 90 minutes, goal-based
  • Badminton — set-based, quick matches

Popular betting markets on sixes cricket

These cricket betting markets are familiar to both new and experienced bettors. A simple example is given for each market.

Easiest Market

Match Winner

Bet on which of the two teams will win the match. There are no draws in T20 — pick team A or team B. Example: if you pick team A, the bet wins if team A wins and loses if team A loses.

Coin Toss

Toss Betting

Bet on the outcome of the toss before the match starts. There are two possibilities — heads or tails. In cricket, the toss result often shapes the direction of the match, especially depending on pitch conditions.

Batting Performance

Top Batsman

Bet on which batsman will score the most runs in the match. Pick the highest run-scorer within a team. It is worth considering form throughout the innings and the nature of the pitch.

Run Count

Total Runs Over/Under

Bet on whether the total runs in a match will be more (over) or less (under) than a set number. Example: if the line is set at 310 total runs, you pick either side — over or under.

Bowling Performance

Top Wicket Taker

Bet on which bowler will take the most wickets in the match. Pace bowler or spinner — look at the pitch and conditions before deciding. A strong bowling performance can change the entire match.

Multiple Selections

Multi Bet

Combine multiple betting selections into a single bet. If all selections are correct, the return is larger. Example: back three teams to win across three matches in one bet — all three must win, and if any one fails, the entire bet loses.

How to read odds in three formats

Betting odds are written in three main formats — decimal, fractional and American. All three express the same probability, just written differently. Decimal format is used most at sixes, but understanding the others is useful.

Example 1 — Team A wins (stake ৳200)

Decimal 2.25 = Fractional 5/4 = American +125

If the bet wins, you get back ৳450 (৳250 profit + your original ৳200 stake); if the bet loses, the full ৳200 is gone.

Example 2 — Team B is the favourite (stake ৳200)

Decimal 1.80 = Fractional 4/5 = American -125

A negative American figure shows how much you need to stake to make ৳100 profit. On a ৳200 stake, the total return is ৳360 (৳160 profit).

Decimal odds show the total return including the stake — multiply the odds figure by your stake to get the full payout. Fractional odds show only the profit portion.

Live In-Play Betting — odds shift when a wicket falls

Live betting means placing bets while the match is in progress. In cricket this is especially useful because every ball, every wicket and every over changes the odds.

Say team A was in a comfortable position at the start of the match. Suddenly two wickets fall in quick succession — team A's odds lengthen immediately (their chances of winning are now considered lower) and team B's odds shorten. This is what makes live betting distinct.

If the powerplay overs produce a big score, the over/under line for total runs moves up. A pinch-hitter coming in during the death overs creates new markets. Following these shifts requires full attention.

Keep in mind — live betting moves fast, so there is very little time to decide. Treat it as a form of entertainment and enjoy it with a clear head.

When odds change in in-play betting

  • 1 Wicket falls — batting team's odds lengthen, bowling team's shorten
  • 2 Big over (15+ runs) — the runs total over line moves up
  • 3 Rain break / DLS — odds are reset when the target changes
  • 4 A close match in the final overs brings both teams' odds closer together
  • 5 Injury or retired hurt — new markets open once the impact is understood

Multi bet and cricket match winner examples

Multi Bet — Three Selections

Combining the results of several matches or markets into one bet increases the potential return, but also increases the risk.

Example 4 — Multi Bet

Three selections: decimal 1.70, 1.80 and 1.90.

Combined odds: 1.70 × 1.80 × 1.90 = 5.81 (approximately).

A ৳100 stake returns ৳581, but all three selections must win — if any one loses, the full ৳100 is gone.

Some practical tips for cricket betting

  • 1 Understand the format — a strategy that works in T20 may not apply in Test. Read the pitch report and weather before placing a bet.
  • 2 Rather than betting on every market in one match, pick two or three specific markets where you have a clearer view.
  • 3 Multi bet returns look large, but one wrong selection loses the whole bet — keep multi bets to a small portion of your activity.
  • 4 Live betting is a game of quick decisions. Set a limit beforehand and avoid placing large bets on impulse.
  • 5 Betting is for entertainment. Read the responsible gaming guidelines and stay within your own budget.

Common Questions & Answers — Cricket Betting

T20 matches finish in just 20 overs — results shift quickly and live markets stay more active. ODI matches have 50 overs, so the middle overs matter more and there is a bit more time to analyse. Test is the longest format — matches run for five days and a draw is a valid result, so the market structure is different too. There are no draws in T20 or ODI.

Yes. A multi bet combines several selections, so the potential return is larger but every selection must be correct. If two out of three selections are right, the bet still loses. With a single bet, only that one specific outcome needs to be correct. Multi bets can be enjoyable, but it is best to keep them to a small part of your betting.

In cricket, odds move fastest when a wicket falls. Two wickets falling in a row reduces the batting team's chances of winning, so their odds lengthen. A big over during the powerplay or a close match in the final overs also triggers quick changes. During a rain break and DLS recalculation, odds are temporarily suspended and reset according to the new target.

With decimal odds, working out the total return is straightforward — multiply your stake by the odds. Example: odds of 2.25 and a stake of ৳200 gives a total return of ৳200 × 2.25 = ৳450 (which includes ৳250 profit and your original ৳200 stake). With fractional odds, only the profit portion is shown, so you add the stake separately.

The core markets are the same — match winner, total runs, top batsman and so on. There may be some differences due to tournament length and number of teams. BPL features Bangladeshi franchises and local players, making it more familiar to local fans. IPL is a larger league, so there are more matches and more available markets. Both tournaments offer all standard T20 format markets.
